How to Setup a Triple Wide Video Wall?

We’ve been talking a lot about Environmental Projection lately and thought it would be good to show some basic triple wide (or 3 screen) setups. Below is a couple of pictures from the 2010 Building 429 tour where Orange Thread Media did all the custom content and design. If you’re new to Building 429, I would also encourage you to check out their newest CD that is about to hit iTunes. Their single, “Listen to the Sound” is pretty good, but as someone who has had the opportunity to work on their tour content, the whole album is phenomenal.

You’ll notice in this picture that Building 429′s design is very simple-three 6′x8′ rear project screens immediately behind the drummer. They wanted to create a video wall that the width spanned the entire area of stage they played in allowing their songs to come to life with “larger than life” live lyrics, graphics and imagery. Throughout the course of the evening, we showcase high energy light effects to dynamic still images to bring the audience into a whole other world. Here’s a preview of their latest song “Made for You.”

The screens are being powered by 3 BenQ MP515ST projectors, each 2500 lumens. This is a feat in itself because for $600 they get a killer image and don’t need much room to throw the projection image. As far as image processing goes, the band’s video tech is cueing each video from a MacBook Pro on the side of stage using ProVideoPlayer and a TripleHead2Go (both of which we can provide you with).

As you can tell, the result was amazing. It added incredible energy and emotion into the band’s already rocking concert. We’ve been able to help take the audience on a journey and emphasize the stories they tell. The setup is simple and if you’re trying to do this yourself, you don’t have to have ProVideoPlayer. Use whatever presentation software you desire and just grab the three similar projectors you have lying around.

In this show it’s not the equipment or technology that matters, its the content that brings the show to life. No matter what event or production you are involved in, I am a firm believer that the way in which we make the imagery appear on the screen can be done in a number of different ways. There isn’t just one correct way.

We could have used a simple Quicktime Player or Keynote if we really needed to… we used what we were comfortable with and what I knew would last. It’s the content that is so important here. The content is helping broadcast their story and amplify their sound. When we are able to use visuals to create various atmospheres and emotions, we begin to create an experience that will never be forgotten. It’s the power of content that drives an experience.

Make sure to check out Building 429′s music, I don’t think you will be disappointed.
